Nearly 30 years ago we worked on a major project to provide 122 seat cushions for the quire. The project was initiated by the Cathedral's Womens Guild and was the first of its kind for the Cathedral. Stitching was undertaken by men and women of the Canterbury Diocese and Friends of the Cathedral.
Each cushion bears the coat of arms of an Archbishop, Dean or Archdeacon contained within a Canterbury Cross. There are also three bearing the arms of the City of Canterbury, the Abbey of Bec in Normandy and the University of Kent.
The cushions were worked on 7 hpi double thread canvas in cross stitch. This allowed the canvas to be worked in petit point on single threads at 14 hpi to give extra detail to the coats of arms.
